Yandex Becomes a Ukrainian Site

12 April, 2006, МоскваЯндекс

Internet, April 12, 2006. Starting today, all Ukrainian Internet users can access Yandex directly. They connect to Yandex services within the Ukrainian segment of the Internet and therefore are not charged for international traffic. In order to provide local connectivity, Yandex has installed its network equipment at the Ukrainian Internet exchange point UA-IX in Kiev.

There is a dedicated channel connecting the Yandex proxy server at UA-IX and Yandex data center in Moscow. All queries of Ukrainian users to resources in yandex.ru, yandex.ua, narod.ru, and ya.ru domains as well as replies to these queries go through the proxy server.

“Many Ukrainian ISPs still have different tariffs for internal and international traffic. By placing our servers at UA-IX, we made Yandex available at the price of domestic Ukrainian traffic,” comments Sergey Petrenko, Yandex.Ukraine CEO. “In addition, Yandex and its services have become almost twice faster for Ukrainian users. We’ll be upgrading our capacities as traffic grows. I would like to give special thanks to our partners from Digital Generation: their specialists provided excellent quality of service and helped Yandex staff implement the chosen technical solution.”

Yandex announced the opening of its Ukrainian representative office and www.yandex.ua portal in September 2005. Today, 700,000 Ukrainian users use Yandex each week; this amounts to around 7% of the total Yandex audience.
