The Yandex Eighth Open Internet Search Cup: 112 Players Continue Competing to Become "The Person Who Found Everything"

Internet, November 14, 2007. The first round of the Yandex Eighth Annual Open Internet Search Cup has come to a close with 112 players, all of whom gave at least 11 correct answers, left standing.

Exactly 1,896 participants scored at least one point in the competition and 160 of these were junior players from various schools across Russia. Some of the most active participating schools were Anichkov Lyceum of St.Petersburg, Nayanova University of Samara, and Gymnasium No. 1 of Krasnodar.

During the first round, participants were asked to find answers to questions using the Internet. The question which received the highest number of correct answers (458) was "What is the name of the Russian poet who in 1923 interviewed a person, which later became known as Hô Chí Minh?" The most difficult question was "What is the Latin name of an animal that has its mammary glands on its shoulders?" This question did not receive the right answer. The fastest response time was 15 seconds for the question "How old was Daniel Craig when he was offered the role of Agent 007?" On average, contestants spent approximately 130 seconds to answer each question while they were given 180 seconds for that.

The first round included participants from all of Russia's regions, as well as the CIS and other foreign countries. The results of the contest showed winners in 14 regions.

All of them will receive Yandex trademark prizes. The first round winners will continue to compete for the title of "The Person Who Found Everything" and a monetary award of 701,000 RUR (approximately $28,000 USD). The final round will be contested on December 13th on the youth-oriented television channel, O2TV, in Moscow.
